Fun fact: These coins have the pillar and wave design that became a global mainstay throughout the 1700s. It was made out of silver from colonial Spain's largest mine in Potosi, Bolivia. The waves symbolize peace.
Silver cobs are known as "reales" and some cobs were struck with a date. Most show a mintmark and an initial or monogram for the assayer, the mint official who was responsible for weight and fineness. An entire mountain of silver was discovered in Potosi in the early 1500s.
In 1773, the last cob ever struck came off the press in Potosi. Since that point, coins are milled, or machine produced.
