Pearl, known as “The Queen of Gems,” are ranked the most popular gemstone in the world. They've become infamous as a captivating jewel since they were discovered. June babies are lucky because not only is pearl the official birthstone for the month of June, but they also have bonus birthstones: moonstone and alexandrite. Lucky them for having three birthstones!
How pearls are formed
Pearls are the only jewels created by a living animal by forming inside the shell of oysters. When an irritation occurs inside them, such as a grain of sand or piece of shell, they ease the irritation by coating it with layers of nacre, building it up to create a pearl. The pearls are basically blisters, only much prettier!
The history of pearls
The earliest record of pearls dates back to the Ancient Roman times. At the time, it was believed that pearls were a symbol of wealth and prestige. Roman ruler, Julius Caesar created a law that prohibited people from wearing pearls, not allowing them to wear fine jewelry. Only people from the upper class were allowed to wear them. We're so thankful that rule has changed!
Types of pearls
There are two different types of pearls: saltwater and freshwater. The only saltwater pearls that are formed are Tahitian, Akoya, and South Sea pearls. These pearls are more valuable because they are created without peoples intrusion, being naturally formed.
Freshwater pearls are farmed in lakes, rivers, and ponds. They are produced by placing a small object inside the clam to start the creation, making them very stunning in jewelry pieces with their pastel colors and range of shapes they form in.
