Ancient Coin Jewelry: The Denarius

Ancient Coin Jewelry: The Denarius

At Design House, we're all about unique, bold characteristics that help us tell unforgettable stories through jewelry. Our ancient coin cabinet holds rich history and no shortage of one-of-a-kind designs.

Our favorite coin to work with at the moment is the Roman denarius, a silver currency that was worth a day's pay for Roman cavalry members. A Roman foot soldier (legionary) received a payment of one third of one denarius to be put toward equipment maintenance and daily expenses. Throw some sapphires on these special coins and you have a truly rare piece!

Our favorite design aspect to these ancient coin beauties can be found on the obverse (front) of the coin: Roma, the patron goddess and protector of Rome. Roma appears on the base of the column of Antoninus Pius. She's been seen as a goddess, near-saint, and symbol of civilization itself. She remains the oldest continuous political-religious symbol in Western civilization. Her figure is argued to be visualized in society as early as 280 B.C.

Whether you're a history buff or just appreciate the distinct designs of these ancient jewelry pieces, we carry a wide variety of pendants, earrings, and rings that originate as old as 6th century B.C.
