All About Diamonds: April's Birthstone

It's no secret that diamonds are one of our absolute favorite stones to work with at Design House, and for good reason! We love their rich history, evolving methods of creation, and unique qualities. Take a look at some of our favorite fun diamond facts below:

Rainbow Stone

Yes! Diamonds are unique minerals that come in many different colors like red, blue, green, yellow, pink and gray, among other colors. The rarest of all colored diamonds are red diamonds and there are only 20 to 30 natural red diamonds in the world. Check out our fancy yellow diamond ring and our salt and pepper diamond ring

April’s Birthstone

The diamond is the traditional birthstone of April. This dazzling gem symbolizes steadfast love, devotion, and finding one’s inner strength. Diamonds are the toughest gemstones on earth and can only be cut by another diamond. Due to diamonds' durability, they were named after the Greek word, “adamas,” meaning “invincible.”

A Dazzling History

Recorded in 1477, Archduke Maxemillian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy with the first ever engagement ring that contained a diamond. Diamond engagement and wedding rings later grew popular in the Victorian Era due to Queen Victoria’s love for diamond jewelry.

By the 1950s, diamond culture was booming. Hollywood glamorized actresses in sparkling diamond jewelry to array in movies. In an iconic 1953 film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Marylin Monroe sang “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” which quickly became a prominent phrase, even to this day.

It's Raining Diamonds!

That’s right! Saturn, a planet within our solar system, literally rains diamonds! Every year, this beautiful ringed planet releases 1,000 tons of precious treasures from its atmosphere into its mantle, where heating and vaporization occurs and the process is repeated.

One-of-a-Carbon

Diamonds are the only gemstones made of a single element, pure carbon. These stunning gems are formed under intense heat and pressure 100 miles below the earth’s surface. If you are currently wearing a natural diamond, your stone is thousands of years old!
