Our Favorite Gemstones: Peridot!

Peridot has often been a divisive gemstone since it’s color is so bold and electric green, but this fine piece of gemstone is stunning in jewelry. The vibrance of the lime green color is something you can’t miss when wearing it.

Peridot are formed within the earth’s mantle and are brought to the surface by volcanic activity where they are found in igneous rocks. So wherever there are volcanoes, most likely, there’s peridot to be found.

Peridot is one of the gemstones to be found in one color only - green. Although its most popular shade is the eye-catching lime green hue, the color of this stone ranges from yellow lime to olive green.

The name “peridot” comes from the Arabic “Faridat” which means “gem.” It’s one of the oldest gemstones ever recorded, first originating in 1500 BC by Egyptians who used the stones as jewelry. They referred to this stone as the “gem of the sun”. Peridot used to be mistaken as emerald because of their green color similarities. This stone also had other names like Olivine and Chrystolite.

In the ancient times, peridot were mined on the Egyptian island Topazios then, now known as St. John’s Island in the Red Sea. This gemstone was only mined at night since it was more easily spotted in the dark than during the day. However, mining at night was risky because the island was infested with snakes.
